How Do I Stop Nearsightedness From Getting Worse?

Eye care professionals and researchers are looking at nearsightedness. For starters, childhood nearsightedness is increasing at an alarming rate. Experts are trying to find more effective solutions.

Once you know what is causing this vision problem, preventing or stopping it will be easier. This vision disorder is common and usually develops before the age of 20. Nearsightedness affects a significant percentage of the American population.

How Common Is Nearsightedness?

This eye focus disorder affects more than 40 percent of Americans. The number of people with nearsightedness is rapidly increasing, especially among kids. Eye care professionals expect this trend to continue.

According to some studies, one in four parents today has a child with a certain level of nearsightedness. Does your child spend too much time in front of a digital screen? Does he/she engage in other near activities for extended periods? If so, your child might have an increased likelihood of developing nearsightedness.

What Is Nearsightedness?

Also known as myopia, this vision problem results from a distortion in the eyeball’s shape. Even a slight distortion can cause images to project in front of the retina instead of directly onto it. People with myopia tend to see objects that are up close quite well. However, they find it more difficult to see objects that are farther away. Such objects appear blurry.

Is It Possible to Prevent Myopia From Worsening?

Most nearsighted people wear eyeglasses or contact lenses to deal with the symptoms. However, these interventions do not prevent it from worsening. They aim to reduce the symptoms of nearsightedness. However, you can prevent myopia from worsening by doing the following:

Spend More Time Outdoors

If you want to stop myopia from worsening, consider spending more time outdoors. This condition can worsen when you spend too much time focusing your eyes on something. Activities such as staring at a computer screen, knitting, or reading for long periods can worsen the condition. Therefore, spend some time outside and focus on distant objects as often as you can.

Vision Therapy

Performing daily eye exercises can also stop myopia on its tracks. Do you spend many hours every day at work or school sitting in front of your desk? If so, you should spare some time to exercise your eyes. Vision therapy involves utilizing eye movements such as accommodation, fusion, and convergence.

One of the best things about this form of therapy is that you do not have to do it forever. Once you build up your eye muscle strength, you will not need to spend too much time performing eye exercises. However, like any other type of muscle, your eye muscles need a certain level of exercise to keep them strong.

Take Breaks When Engaged in Near Focus Activities

It can be tempting or even necessary to spend hours on end reading or working or using your computer. However, doing so might worsen your nearsightedness. Thus, you should give your eyes a break every 20 minutes or so. You should also take a minute to focus your eyes on something else.

Ask Your Eye Doctor

If you are hoping to prevent your nearsightedness from worsening, you just need to consult an eye doctor. Your doctor will address any concerns or questions you may have and give you the best tips for preventing your vision from worsening.
